The Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events are back for an exciting fourth year, offering opportunities for Iowa educators to gain new insights on how to engage students with science learning.

Scheduled during the month of October, the Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events will incorporate the effective science practices aligned with the Iowa Academic Standards. Teachers, coaches, administrators, higher education faculty, informal educators and other partners are invited to attend one of the three planned events.

“For the past four years, the Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events have provided Iowa educators with a wonderful opportunity to learn, collaborate and celebrate science education together,” said Christopher Like, science education consultant at the Department. “We are excited for this year’s events, which truly create a space where our exceptional science educators from across the state can learn from each other, engage in fun, hands-on learning and gain new strategies and resources.”

The Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events are full-day events, running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided for attendees. The upcoming Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events will be held on the following dates and locations:

  • Oct. 8 - Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska
  • Oct. 16 - Southeast Polk High School in Altoona, Iowa
  • Oct. 21 - St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa

Registration is now open, and seats for sessions are limited. When registering, you will be asked to select your preferences for the event, including which event you would like to attend, your preferred morning session and choices for the afternoon sessions. Some of the afternoon sessions are science field trips that will require each person to provide their own transportation. The deadline to register for the Omaha location is Sept. 25. The registration for the other two Iowa locations closes on Oct. 2.

The Iowa Department of Education partners with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa Science Teachers Section of the Iowa Academy of Science and other host institutions to provide the Fall Regional Science Professional Learning Events.
