Requirements - First Issuance
Two years of successful teaching in an Iowa public school, or 3 years in an accredited private or out-of-state setting.
Usually a holder of an Initial Teaching License or Regional Exchange Teaching License converts to a Standard Teaching License.

Full teaching instruction within grade levels and endorsements listed on the license. Also holds substitute authority including long-term subbing.
Renewals
6 renewal credits and the mandatory reporter training for child abuse.
OR
Verification of a Master's degree or higher, at least 10 years of PK-12 licensed experience, and the mandatory reporter training for child abuse. Substitute experience may count as years of experience if an individual is able to verify at least 91 days of substitute experience per year of experience.
Extension
Yes - if more time is needed to complete renewal requirements.
Conversion
Once the requirements have been met for the Master Educator license, you may apply to convert from a Standard to a Master Educator license. Converting to the Master Educator license is part of the renewal process. To convert, you must meet the renewal requirements: six renewal credits, completion of mandatory reporter training (child), at least five years teaching experience, and completed a master’s degree. Converting the Standard Educator license, will change the license type to a Master Educator license, and renew the license for an additional five years.
