Close to 1,000 students at 60 middle schools and high schools across the state participated in the first-ever virtual Health Sciences Career Day in Iowa on May 15. Students who were unable to join the live event or those who wish to re-visit their favorite topics can now access free recorded sessions online.

Sponsored by the Iowa Hospital Association and the Iowa Department of Education, the Health Sciences Career Day in Iowa recorded sessions feature information and highlights on six high-demand health care occupations. Students interested in health care and science careers can hear more about real-world experiences from Iowa professionals working in the health care field through these recorded sessions.

“The Health Sciences Career Day in Iowa and the newly released recorded sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the different career options available in their communities,” said Heather Meissen, career and technical education administrative consultant for the Department. “The sessions are a great resource for any student who is exploring health care college and career pathways, pursuing a health care industry-recognized credential or enrolling in related career academies.”

The six featured sessions and collaborators include:

  • WinnMed – Physician
  • UnityPoint Health - Nurse
  • MercyOne – Radiology technologist
  • Clarinda Regional Health Center – Respiratory therapist
  • Pella Regional Health Center – Lab technologist
  • Mary Greeley Medical Center – Behavioral health

Each topic session provides details about the various aspects of each job, from patient care responsibilities to education and training requirements. The recorded sessions also capture panel discussions that provide in-depth information on postsecondary pathways as well as direct questions from students.

The Health Sciences Career Day in Iowa recorded sessions are now available on the Iowa Hospital Association’s website and YouTube channel.
