Individuals interested in shaping high-quality dyslexia instruction in Iowa are invited to apply for a membership seat on the Iowa Dyslexia Board.
Established in Iowa Code, the Iowa Dyslexia Board is responsible for guiding, facilitating and overseeing the implementation of dyslexia instruction and its continued improvement. The board has 14 legislated voting members, with terms of membership lasting three years. Initial terms to the board were staggered to ensure at least four of the member terms end each year.
“The Iowa Dyslexia Board is a robust, well-rounded team of educators, parents, state officials and other stakeholders who are dedicated to students and learners with dyslexia characteristics,” said Wanda Steuri, dyslexia and Science of Reading consultant at the Iowa Department of Education. “We encourage Iowans who are interested in dyslexia and structured literacy to join our board and make a difference.”
The Iowa Dyslexia Board meets quarterly and focuses on four main priorities:
- Ensuring dyslexia requirements and recommendations are communicated
- Ensuring a consistent identification of and response to dyslexia
- Promoting high-quality dyslexia-related preservice and inservice learning for educators
- Collaborating to impact supports for students with dyslexia
Membership applications for the Iowa Dyslexia Board will be accepted by the Department through June 30.
Qualified applications will be reviewed after the closing date, and all applicants chosen for an open board position will be contacted with additional information.
Additional information on the Iowa Dyslexia Board can be found on the Department’s website. Specific questions regarding board or application process may be directed to Wanda Steuri at wanda.steuri@iowa.gov.
