The school may determine it is helpful to have nonprescription medications, known as over-the-counter medications or proprietary medications, at school. It is recommended that protocols and a policy for nonprescription medications be developed by the school to include:
- Obtaining signed consent from parent(s) or legal guardian(s) for the types of over the counter medications that will be administered
- Obtaining consent from delegatee for Medication Administration
- Who is responsible, authorized or qualified for providing the over-the-counter medications
- Informing parents that students will only receive manufacturer’s standard dosage within the standard timeframe as provided on the label
- Identifying maximum times students can access this option throughout the school week, month, semester or year
- Identifying and informing parents or legal guardians when and how they will be notified within the day of the student’s use with this option
- Delegatee agrees to communicate with the school nurse and parents regarding administration
- Delegatee agrees to document administration
- Delegatee understands and agrees to follow any additional school or program procedure
