Bruises can be a common occurrence for many children. A bruise forms when blood vessels under the skin break. The trapped blood creates a bruise that's red, black, purple, or blue, then changes color to green and yellow as it heals.
General actions if a child experiences a bruise in their school or program:
There are two times when bruises should be addressed immediately:
- in the instances of bleeding disorders and child abuse
- suspected child abuse (must be reported)
When a child develops a bruise in their school or program:
- Wash your hands and apply gloves.
- Have the student rest the injured area
- Apply a cold compress or icebag covered with a cloth or paper towel for 20 minutes.
- Communicate with the school nurse and parent.
- Document the date, time, what occurred, observation of the bruise, care provided, communication with the student, school nurse, and any communication with the parents in the child’s student health record.
