Gloves are critical in school or program healthcare delivery to act as a barrier, protecting both the person delivering care and the student by preventing the spread of germs, blood, and other body fluids. Gloves reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections by preventing contamination and are a key component of infection control strategies when handling blood or other potentially infectious materials.
Applying Gloves
- Wash your hands: follow the steps in hand hygiene
- Inspect: the glove for any tears or pinholes.
- Grasp: the cuff of the glove.
- Insert: your fingers into the glove, keeping your palm facing up.
- Pull: the cuff over your wrist to secure the glove.
- Repeat: for the other hand.
Removing Gloves
- Pinch: the outside of the cuff of the first glove with your opposite hand.
- Peel: the glove away from your hand and turn it inside out as you remove it.
- Hold: the first glove rolled into a ball within your gloved hand.
- Use: the gloved hand to pinch the cuff of the second glove.
- Peel: the second glove off inside out, so that the first glove is inside the second.
- Dispose: of both gloves in the appropriate bin.
