Any serious injury or illness may lead to shock. Shock is a lack of blood and oxygen getting to the body tissues. Shock is a life-threatening condition. Stay calm and get immediate assistance.
Actions
- Check for a medical bracelet or student's emergency action plan (if applicable)
- Call 911
- Keep the student in a flat position of comfort
- Elevate feet 8-10 inches, unless this causes pain or a neck/back or hip injury is suspected.
- Loosen clothing around the neck and waist
- Keep the student’s body at a normal temperature. (example: cover student with a blanket or sheet)
- Give the student nothing to eat or drink
- If a student vomits or states they feel like they are going to get sick, roll the student into the recovery position on their left side while keeping their back and neck in straight alignment if injury is suspected
- Stay with the student until help arrives
- Contact the student’s parents and the school nurse (if available)
