Content Information
Debriefing is a structured process that allows individuals involved in a traumatic event to process their emotions, experiences, and reactions in a safe and supportive environment. Licensed school nurses, paraprofessionals, and anyone involved in any emergency situation that occurs from the provision of emergency school healthcare delivery, a crisis, or an event at school should take time to discuss the details and response. Debriefings should be conducted with strict confidentiality to encourage open and honest sharing.
This process can enhance resilience, reduce stress, and promote a healthier school health workforce environment. Regardless of the individual’s consent to perform the school health service or licensure, be aware of two things:
- Everyone handles health emergency response differently.
- Everyone needs a process to communicate.
Debriefing allows for:
- Confidentiality,
- Open communication,
- Sharing of experiences, and
- Identification of areas for improvement in school health services practice.
Timeline & Location
Debriefing should be held soon after the event, in a private and comfortable setting, to maximize effectiveness. Ensure student confidentiality is maintained.
Questions to discuss with individuals involved include (noninclusive):
- How are you feeling?
- How did it go?
- What aspects did you think you managed well?
- What aspects would you have wanted to change?
