Students may require orthotic devices to support proper body alignment, improve mobility, or manage health conditions affecting muscles, bones or joints. Orthotic devices help students participate in their school or program safely.

- Use universal precautions
- Ensure orthotic device is clean, dry and in good condition
- Gather required materials if needed (socks, padding or device straps)
- Explain the process to the student
- Have the student position themselves comfortably depending on the device and mobility level
- Check the student’s skin for redness, irritation or sores. If this is observed, report to the school nurse
- Align the orthotic device according to the manufacturer’s or healthcare provider’s instructions
- Fasten and check the fit to ensure the device is not pinching, causing pressure points, or misalignment
- Remove gloves and wash your hands
- Follow any additional steps required depending on the student's health needs
- Document the date, time, procedure, student’s response, your initials and signature

- Remove the device gently
