Range of motion (ROM) exercises for children, both passive (assisted) and active (independent), aim to improve joint flexibility and mobility. They should be performed gently, without force, and can be incorporated into daily routines. Range of motion is only done with permission from the child’s parent and their provider’s orders.
Steps
- Have the student in a comfortable position.
- Explain the procedure to the student at his/her level of understanding
- Wash your hands
- Follow universal precautions
- Follow the instructions from the health care provider, to include the type of range of motion, the specific area or body part, the specific exercises, the repetition and frequency, precautions and contraindications
- Remove gloves and wash your hands
- Document the date, time, procedure, learner’s response, your initials and signature
