Slide boards can benefit learners with paraplegia, lower-extremity amputation, and decreased balance or strength in the lower extremities to transfer from the wheel chair to a desk, bench or a toilet and vice versa. The instructional steps assist the registered nurse working under the auspices of the school or program in professional judgement and accountability of delegation. Additional steps may be required depending on the learner’s health needs.
Steps
- Wash your hands
- Place a gait belt around the child
- The wheelchair is placed next to the desk and brakes are applied
- The wheelchair arm rest is removed and footrests are removed or swung away
- The student shifts their weight away from the desk and you place the slide board under the patients buttocks/leg and on top of the wheelchair seat
- The other side of the slide board is also placed securely on the desk seat
- Place one of your knees between the student’s knees (if applicable) and your other knee near the wheelchair's front, close to the desk seat.
- Hold the gait belt and slowly slide the student across the board from the wheelchair to the desk
- Reposition the student to sit in the desk
- Remove the gait belt and slide board
- Wash your hands
- Follow any additional steps required depending on the student's health needs
- Document the date, time, procedure, student’s response, your initials and signature
