Learners may have complaints of stomach aches and pains that can have various origins, including (non-inclusive):
- illness or injury
- hunger or overeating
- diarrhea or constipation
- food poisoning
- menstrual difficulties
- chronic health conditions
- pregnancy
If the learner sustained a serious injury resulting from:
- athletic participation,
- violence,
- being struck by a fast-moving object,
- falling from a height, or
- being thrown from a moving object
General actions to address a student who experiences stomach ache or pain, related to a serious injury in school or their program:
- Contact the school nurse (if available) and notify the parent of the injury
- Encourage the parent to contact their healthcare provider
General actions to address a student who experiences stomach ache or pain not related to injury in school or their program:
- Ask the learner what they have had to eat recently
- Ask the student about their bathroom habits
- checking the student’s temperature
- identifying if there are additional symptoms
- Notify the school nurse (if available)
- Follow the childhood and school exclusion recommendations
