A stomach ache is a pain or discomfort in the abdomen, often caused by gas, indigestion, infection or other digestive issues.
Students may have complaints of stomach aches and pains that can have various origins, including (non-inclusive):
- illness or injury
- hunger or overeating
- diarrhea or constipation
- food poisoning
- menstrual difficulties
- chronic health conditions
- pregnancy
If the student sustained a serious injury resulting from:
- athletic participation,
- violence,
- being struck by a fast-moving object,
- falling from a height, or
- being thrown from a moving object
General actions to address a student who experiences stomach ache or pain, related to a serious injury in school or their program:
- Contact the school nurse (if available) and notify the parent of the injury
- Encourage the parent to contact their healthcare provider
General actions to address a student who experiences stomach ache or pain not related to injury in school or their program:
- Ask the student what they have had to eat recently
- Ask the student about their bathroom habits
- checking the student’s temperature
- identifying if there are additional symptoms
- Notify the school nurse (if available)
- Follow the childhood and school exclusion recommendations
