Learners who are unable to clear secretions themselves due to chronic health conditions, episodic illness, or injury may require oral suctioning at school with a firm plastic catheter that has a suction tip. The instructional steps assist the registered nurse working under the auspices of the school or program in professional judgement and accountability of delegation. Additional steps may be required depending on the learner’s health needs.
Steps
- Gather your supplies, prepare the suction unit, and check that the suction pressure is set according to the healthcare provider’s orders.
- Practice universal precautions
- Wash your hands
- Ensure the student is comfortable and explain the procedure.
- Turn the suction unit on
- Gently insert the hard plastic catheter into the side of the student’s cheek towards the back of the mouth.
- Apply the suction for the time outlined in the child’s healthcare provider’s treatment orders.
- Allow the student to rest between suctioning.
- Follow steps alternating sides of the child’s cheek for repeated suctioning (as needed)
- Gently wipe away any secretions from the child’s mouth with a cloth.
- Follow the manufacturer’s or healthcare provider’s instructions for emptying and cleaning supplies
- Remove your gloves
- Wash your hands
