Content Information
The Emergency Health Services Section is meant to provide recommended procedures delegated by the school nurse to paraprofessionals and unlicensed personnel that have little or no healthcare training to use when the school nurse is not available. It is recommended that staff that are in a position to provide first-aid to learners complete an approved first-aid and CPR course. The school nurse is required to document training and complete an annual skills check on delegated tasks in accordance with licensed practice and standard requirements. The delegates must also sign consent for invasive emergency procedures.
The recommendations appropriate for school settings and programs do not replace unique care required and as delegated by the school nurse or other licensed health providers for individualized learners emergency plans.
It is not the intent to supersede or make invalid any policies of a school board, program, or practice related rules of a licensing board. There may be specific instructions for your school or program. In a true emergency situation, use best judgment. If there are questions, reach out to your school nurse.
