Accidental amputation refers to the loss of body parts (e.g., fingers or extremities) due to incidents like machinery accidents, power tool incidents, or serious school accidents. When a child or individual experiences an accidental amputation, first aid measures can impact outcomes and mitigate further injury.
Actions
- Apply universal precautions
- Control bleeding utilizing the training you have received:
- Call 911
- If a fracture is suspected, gently support the part and elevate it
- Bandage the wound firmly without interfering with circulation.
- If there is a detached part of the body:
- Place the detached part in a plastic bag.
- Tie the bag
- Place the bag in a container of ice water.
- Do not put the amputated part directly on ice.
- Send the bag with the EMS.
- Manage shock: If the individual is able, have them lie down. Raise the legs slightly only if there are no suspected spinal injuries.
- Notify the school nurse, school leadership, and parents immediately.
- Practice universal precautions
- Remain with the student until help arrives.
- Wash your hands
- Document the date, time, any delegated interventions provided, observations, student response to intervention (if applicable), and your signature and credentials (if applicable)
- Follow any additional school or program procedure.
- Debrief with the school nurse.
