Children sometimes present to the health office with a splinter or imbedded pencil tip. If the splinter or pencil tip is protruding above the skin surface and is shallow there are general actions that can be completed by trained personnel.
General actions to address splinters or imbedded pencil tips protruding above the surface of the skin:
- Use universal precautions
- Remove with tweezers unless this causes the learner discomfort
- Have the learner wash their hands
- Apply a bandage if necessary
If the splinter is under the skin and deep, do not probe to remove it. Contact the parent and school nurse (if applicable).
