IELS Professional Learning Opportunities

IELS 4th Edition Revision Overview

A 60-minute course providing a comprehensive overview of the newly revised IELS 4th Edition. Participants unpack foundational vocabulary, analyze specific learning areas in collaborative breakout groups and discuss practical application strategies for the upcoming school year .

Course designed for all stakeholders utilizing the IELS framework for children 0-5, including:

  • Early childhood educators and assistant teachers
  • Program administrators, directors and coordinators
  • Curriculum specialists and instructional coaches
  • Home visiting providers

Register for one session only. The same session is offered on multiple dates.


Iowa’s school districts and their community partners operating Statewide Voluntary Preschool Programs (SWVPP) and preschool classrooms providing Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) services, use instructional strategies and interventions to promote children’s development and learning of the knowledge, behaviors and skills included in the IELS. Early Childhood Program Standards

The Iowa Department of Education supports quality learning opportunities and environments for young children by developing, implementing and monitoring preschool programs and services provided by, or in partnership with, school districts. Iowa’s school districts and their community partners operating Statewide Voluntary Preschool Programs (SWVPP), Shared Visions Preschool Program (SV) grantees and preschool classrooms providing Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) instructional services, must meet approved preschool program standards.

The three Iowa approved preschool program standards that meet the characteristics of quality early childhood programs:

2026 Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards

Implementation of the revised Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards will begin July 1, 2026. The Department is developing training and materials to support implementation of the revised IQPPS.
