CTE Standards
  1. Foundational standards and benchmarks have been updated and modernized by a team of IT experts from Iowa’s community colleges, four-year public and private colleges and universities, Iowa STEM Council, the Technology Association of Iowa, and business and industry. The team is also developing standards for the four career pathways within this cluster and service area – network systems, information support and services, web and digital communications, and programming and software development.
  2. The Iowa Department of Education established specific Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code identifiers for the four career pathways mentioned above and will be offering webinars for school districts to learn more.
  3. The Bureau of Educational Examiners (BoEE) has created a CTE Information Technology Endorsement which requires new teachers to take 12 credits of computer science to teach in this area. For teachers who are not currently CTE instructors or enrolled in CTE Education Programs, CTE courses will also be required. More information about the endorsement requirements is available on the BoEE’s website.
  4. Computer science legislation signed into law calls for the Department to convene a computer science work group consisting of educators, higher education representatives, and stakeholders from business and industry. The group will work with BoEE to create a computer science endorsement to mirror the CTE Information Technology endorsement.
