For five days in June, educators from across the state will take over the campus at the University of Northern Iowa for a fun and intensive week of computer science professional development and networking.
Iowa’s premier computer science training, known as Computer Science Professional Development (CS PD) Week, will be held June 12-16 in Cedar Falls. Teachers, administrators, school counselors, coaches, librarians and other staff who are integral to the implementation of high-quality computer science education in Iowa schools are highly encouraged to attend.
“We anticipate having up to 900 educators and school professionals attend CS PD Week,” said Justin Lewis, computer science consultant for the Iowa Department of Education. “Any computer science teacher involved in grades kindergarten through high school is encouraged to sign up and join us in June.”
Through a partnership between the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa’s Area Education Agencies (AEA), NewBoCo and the University of Northern Iowa, CS PD Week provides the opportunity for Iowa educators to learn trending topics and best practices in computer science education.
Over 30 sessions pertaining to elementary, middle and high schools will be offered and will focus on the areas of computer science integration, curriculum-building, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, physical computing, and supporting computer science for counselors, coaches and administrators.
“CS PD Week is a great opportunity for everybody to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the different areas of computer science,” Lewis said. “And it’s a chance for us to celebrate our successes thus far, too.”
All CS PD Week attendees will receive a daily stipend, breakfast and lunch, course materials, lodging and free parking. Recertification credits and graduate credits are also available for selected sessions.
Registration is free for all participants. For more information on CS PD Week and how to register for sessions, visit the Iowa AEA’s webpage or contact iowa-cs-pd-week@gwaea.org.
