Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which takes place each year on the third Monday in January. This day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
To help honor the day, the Iowa Department of Human Rightsβ Office on the Status of African Americans will host its 34th annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday at 10:45 a.m.
The virtual event will be streamed via the Department of Human Rights Facebook page. It will include Governor Kim Reynolds' Proclamation designating Jan. 16 as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and the period of Jan. 15β21 as Martin Luther King Jr. Week.
