The deadline for applying for a grant to grow fresh produce at school is Jan. 20.

The grants can be used to purchase materials, supplies, seed and food preparation equipment for gardening, hydroponics, green house and other innovative projects. Public and nonpublic schools operating a USDA Child Nutrition Program are eligible to apply for this sub-grant opportunity.

Agriculture Education and FFA chapter sub-grants may be awarded up to $2,000 for projects that focus on developing, implementing or enhancing local gardens and agricultural education programs. The garden project will include student involvement in the planning, maintaining and harvesting. Sub-grant recipients must partner with their local school nutrition department to incorporate the food into school meals.
